Pain in the neck

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

This happened to me about 5 years ago. As you can tell by the fact that I'm writting this story personnaly (and not communicating through a medium), I didn't die.

A sore neck can be one of THE most irritating and painful things you can suffer from - what's worse, they can come from nowhere (no justifiable cause).

The sheer pain can drive you to do strange things! Like wrap an old electric blanket tightly around your own neck and plug it in. FYI it worked very well! As I sat there, watching TV and the insulation on the power cord start to 'brown off', I congratulated myself on a great idea as I fell into my first comfortable sleep for days!

Then the front doorbell rang. I was startled to my feet, and immediately ran to open the door. Can you spot the problem yet? That's right, children, I didn't unwrap the blanket, or switch the power off.

I think it's personnaly INCREDIBLE that I didn't actually manage to garotte and/or electricute myself, or to be the first person of my family to die from spontaneous (HA!) human combustion. I did manage to fuse the blanket, rip out an electric wall socket and give myself whiplash.

I still had a sore neck, but now I had a good reason for it!

Eh, perhaps it's time for me to go to bed, but I seem to be missing something in this account. Needs a much better write-up!

Maybe not much threat to life, but I like the image. But spontaneous combustion is without an external source of ignition.
