Drunk Spelunker Falls to Death

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

A local man and friends visited Mission Trails park in San Diego and discovered a cave of sorts on the edge of a cliff in an old quarry site. They began regular visits to the cave and typicaly brought copious amounts of beer to consume to help pass the time and make things more exciting. One day this particular individual wanted to prove both his ability to hold his liquor and his daredevil defiance of imminent death by first consuming an entire 12 pack of beer then jumping out to a narrow, sand covered ledge on the edge of the cliff. He reached the ledge but then failed on both accounts. As his roommate warned him he was in a dangerous, slippery spot he, as if on cue, lost his footing and flew in cartoon fashion feet over head off the cliff. After a free fall of at least 50 feet he impacted some boulders then tumbled down a talus slope to come to rest at an odd angle near the valley floor. His friends descended a bit slower and more carefully. When the reached him they found he had succeeded in removing himself from competition in the gene pool. They report it was no big surprise as he was always doing dangerous, foolish things.

I don't know the date on this offhand but can get it as a roommate/eyewitness is a close friend. I've had the actual ledge he fell from pointed out to me from just above but refused to try to duplicate any part of this stunt, even on a dare. Maybe if I drank beer I'd try it? The event was reported to the police and fully documented. I'm certain it will have been reported in the San Diego Union/Tribune.

Definitely Keep: Personal Account
Not that uncommon an injury, and no reference

Neutral: Personal Account
I don't like it in its current form - maybe with a better write-up and verification. Still, I say let the readers decide.
