Rapelling from a train bridge

Several years ago an adventurous pair decided to get in some rappelling off the huge bridge taken by the Boone Scenic Valley Railroad train over the Des Moines river in Iowa. I can’t adequately describe how breathtakingly high over the river valley this narrow train bridge is, I can say from experience that it’s both stunningly beautiful and somewhat nerve wracking to take the open train ride over this abyss. Our adventurers had to be completely fearless because they walked out onto the middle of this bridge, tied off their ropes and rappelled down. I don’t know exactly how far down they got before the train came by on it’s daily tour of the valley, but one wouldn’t think that having the train rumble overhead would be that big of an issue for these two. The problem, however, is that they had tied the ropes to the sturdiest support possible, the steel train tracks.Submitted on 10/18/2002
