Weather hotline

A few guys from my flying club - all engineering students - decided to go to the airfield for a weekday flight. Once we arrived, the weather turned quite bad. Heavy rain, thunder and lightning. We were sitting in the clubhouse, noses against the windows, desparately hoping to see a hint of blue sky.
Under normal circumstances, it is quite easy to get a weather forecast by calling the met office, but we were all somewhat reluctant to touch the phone during a thunderstorm.
One of us was possibly a bit more bored than the rest. And having at least half of an electrical engineering education, it was not hard for him to find good arguments that the caution about phoning during thunderstorms were old wives tales from the time when the phone wires were suspended on poles.
He stood up and announced: "I am going to phone the weather!", went into the little office and closed the door.
A few seconds later the lightning struck. A blinding white flash shone under the door and the whole building shuddered under the thunderclap.
Our friend emerged shaking from the room, hair ruffled and quite shocked. "Holy s***!" he exclaimed. "Sparks came out of the handset!"
The reaction from his flying buddies???
"Silly us - we thought you were going to phone the weather office - not the cloud itself." Submitted on 10/13/2002
