DAREDEVIL LEAP ENDS IN DEATH PLUNGE TRAGEDY
A 22 year old man died after falling 40ft whena daredevil leap from a Maidenhead multi-storey car park ended in tragedy in the early hours of Sunday.
arc Nicholson was jumping from the third floor of the Broadway car park onto the spiral exit ramp when he lost his balance and fell to the pavement below.
Paramedics were called shortly after 1am and although they revived him at the scene, Mr Nicholson died from his injuries several hours later.
r Nicholson had completed the same jump earlier in the evening with friends and had then gone out drinking in town.
His best friend for the last 20 years, Bradley Lucas,23, was standing next to him when he jumped. He said: "He only just landed. He misbalanced, and sort of whipped back and fell flat on the floor.
"I watched from a bird's eye view what happened.
"I just ran down the stairs going: 'That didn't happen' and I was expecting to see him sitting up holding his head but he was completely motionless and his eyes were open just a little bit."
r Lucas said his friend's death had brought home how stupid they had been but he denied they had been influenced by the Parisian Yamakasi craze, a new urban art form, adapting gymnastics to fit a rooftop setting, as shown on links for BBC TV programmes.
He said: "We just did stupid stuff when we were bored, like finding gaps to jump. We had never done that jump before that night".
aidenhead police said they were treating it as an isolated incident and there was no suggestion of a wider rooftop-jumping craze. Submitted on 10/04/2002
