"Almost" Got Me

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

I was working at the time as a welder and was habitually keeping my work place clean and neat to prevent accidents. To my long lasting pain and disbelief there was another person working at the same facility as me who should "be" taken out of the gene pool before he does it to someone else. The story is that one morning I was doing some welding on MY table which had been cleaned the previous day. While a welder works they have a special helmet that totally protects their head from the welding heat and fumes, the only negative part is that because of the special dark tinted glass used to protect your eyes you can only see the weld arc and nothing else. Apparently this second worker looked at my very clean and orderly table and decided that it would be a good place to fill some gasoline cans. He was standing about 2 meters away from me while doing this. I was totally unaware of his presence till I was engulfed in a ball of flame which took all my facial hair and did damage to my nose and mouth. Apparently the table had a very slight tilt toward the point where I was working and as this "other person" (I won't say idiot) was filling his gasoline cans, some of the fuel spilled on the table and made its way toward me. When it finally reached me the welding arc caused it to flash into flames. Luckily for both of us the other worker had just several moments before finished capping the last can and remeoved it from the table. Just imagine what would have happened if 20 liters of gasoline would have exploded. He lived and I suffered burn injuries that were not too bad. There should be laws to remove people from the gene pool after things like that happen....

Definitely Keep: Personal Account
Bystander hurt rules out darwin but it rates as a personal account definatly

It's better than most PAs, and I agree with Gregory that the "injured bystander" rule doesn't count here.

as the hurt bystander is submitting the story, I would tend to waive that rule.Filling a gas can next to someone welding is at least more original than the usual stupid gas tricks involving lighters.
