I believe we did this in highschool chemistry with lacapodium (?sp), which if I'm not mistaken was fern spores. Without an enclosed space would likely produce fireball as opposed to explosion.

I used to be an Army Bomb Disposal Tech, and I agree with Bert. Anonymous doesn't know what he's talking about! Dust bombs can be set off in the open.

Not a Darwin- but: He is wrong. I do special effects fireballs with finely powdered flammables, the event described is quite possible. I have used: coffe creamer, corn starch, powdered calf milk replacers, fine sawdust and, yes, flour. All will burn furiously when susspended in air & lit from below. We do these in open areas, not wanting to take down buildings... These are much safer than gasoline fireballs to work around and are frequently used in film work.
