PA: Backyard Body Surfing
2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance
I wasn't sure how to send you a note of confirmation. I went through the message board thing, but it didn't seem to be the place. I was hopping around reading some of the funny stories when I came across the "Backyard Body Surfing" story in the March edition.
I don't know how many details the author submitted, but I can tell you that it actually happened in Bloomington, IN back around 1989-90 or so (I was in eighth grade at the time, I think). This guy, Jake Vigdor, really did set his jeans on fire thinking it wouldn't burn him and then jumped into the backyard pool to extinguish it. This story says he only had minor burns, so this specific one might have been another story. Jake ended up with second degree burns on his legs and had several skin grafts over the few years after the incident. As for gasoline burning too hot, I can't confirm that it was actually gasoline, I thought I was told it was kerosene or butane or something like that. My sister went to school with Jake and even visited him in the hospital.
With the burns he suffered, I can't imagine Jake isn't sterile, but that part I can't personally confirm.
You can count that one as actually true.
Thanks,
Victoria
