NOMINATION FOR HONORABLE MENTION
June 27, 1992 (Fritch, TX)
I have a theory that the better/more exciting the storm footage/tornado porn is, the lower the I.Q.of the "videographer" is. One of my most prized possessions is my VHS copy of "Twister: Fury on the Plains" where a gentleman video tapes a couple of tornadoes as one of them approaches his trailpark. (The video is from his point of view so he doesn't appear on camera.) While he is video taping, he is struck by lightning (seen as a bright flash of light on the video and accompanied with a loud pop)! It knocks him out for a couple of seconds but he get right back up and continues to record the tornado as it blows apart a trailer across the street from his. He get knocked down and out for a couple of seconds by debris from his own house and, again, gets right back up and keeps on taping!
I would like to nominate this individual for an "Honorable Mention". (I would like to nominate anyone who video tapes a tornado without having the Master's to back themselve up, but this guy takes the cake!) Most normal midwestern folk would have taken shelter the instant the sirens went off or a tornado was spotted. Instead, my hero grabs a camera and sticks it out in the trenches. The lightning should've have killed him. The tornado should've killed him. And yet, I find the whole segment to be very inspiring in that: a)thank God I am not that dumb, and b) if this guy can keep plugging away when the going gets tough, well, then so can I!
The video is entitled: Twister: Fury on the Plains.
