Homemade explosive kills man
ALTA - A 38-year-old man who was killed when a homemade explosive device detonated Saturday night at his Hide Away Loop residence has been identified as Larry A. Ross.
The Placer County Sheriff's Department said Ross had filled a five-gallon metal can with acetylene gas in an effort to make a "noise-making device" for a birthday celebration.
"He had a hot torch in his hand, and it got too close, igniting the gas," said Sheriff's Sgt. John Addoms.
The can exploded and Ross was struck in the head with a large piece of the metal can, resulting in a severe wound, sheriff's officials said.
Ross was flown to Sutter Roseville Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 2:40 a.m. Sunday.
