A man who was described as a career criminal by the police was seen running from a house in Tulsa with a large black bag. A bystander called 911 and the police quickly found the man running down Riverside Avenue. When they began to chase he jumped into the river and tried to swim to the other side with the 50 pound bag.
He began to scream for help but then fought off the cop trying to save him. He went under several times before going under for good. He was still clutching the bag until the last few times he went under.
The water rescue squad found the man in 8 feet of water near the bag.
Burglary suspect fleeing police drowns in Arkansas River
TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ A burglary suspect fleeing police ran into the Arkansas River and drowned Friday, officials said.
A police officer saw the man, who hasn't been identified, leaving a home in Tulsa's midtown, allegedly carrying a bag of loot, said Hubert Rouse, spokesman for the Tulsa Fire Department, which pulled the body from the water. The officer chased the man to the river's edge, Rouse said.
Rouse said the man went about 15 feet out into the river and called for help. Apparently, he couldn't swim and began to bob up and down in about eight feet of water, Rouse said.
Officers tried to rescue the man, but he continued to try to get away, and finally, he went under and did not resurface, Rouse said.
Police, unable to find the man in the murky water, called firefighters, who used heat-sensitive cameras and long poles to pull the man's body from the river about 30 minutes later, Rouse said.
