Even IT types can be contender

Being something of a old hand at Tech Support work, I've seen all sorts of stupidity with Technology, but one of my co workers took the cake last month. The small college town we live and work in can lead to all sorts of P.I.T.A. type customers with the usual grumbles, "It won't work" or "I just installed/bought this from you, it's your fault it's not working" so to keep our collective (albeit it borderline) sanity we made up some steam venting games, one of our favorites being keeping all the old broken components and after they start to pile up taking them outside to be uncerominously smashed. Usually lots of fun, a great way to release pent up stress. However one occasion, our "newest recriute" took this game a bit far, having just finished telling a person that they installed the new motherboard wrong and basically they blew the whole computer up by not having a professional do it. Obiviously this caused said customer to explode in our faces, calling us con artists, among other things, and all sorts of veiled threats. After clearing up the matter with a quick overview of a manual that specifically says *the gist of it anyway* If you're not experienced, you could blow this delicate, expensive piece of equipment up, and it's your responsability to deal with the reprecussions" We decided to wait till closing and totally destroy the dead computer. Unfortunately for my coworker, he forgot a small issue with computers with power supplies still inside. He raised the store sledge, the BFH (hey, us IT types have all sorts of tools to deal with computers) to "close the account" so to speak, brought it down, and BOOM! The power supply still inside hadn't lost the residual charge inside, which caused the transformers inside to react badly to the introduction of our beloved BFH. We're still not exactly sure how, but the PS inside blew up instead of yielding to a good smashing, and our intrepid worker ended up with a fragment of aluminum lodged in his toe, as well as a large amount of smoke in the area. Perhaps it was a bit cruel to give him the nickname "old smokey" but it releases stress to think about why, even for himSubmitted on 08/16/2002
