Denton man's shooting death 'looks like' accident, officials say

LEWISVILLE LAKE - A Denton man fatally shot himself Sunday while fishing with two friends who said he misjudged the rounds in a pistol, according to officials.
Sergio A. Moreno, was found dead at the scene by Denton Fire Department personnel about 5:40 p.m. Sunday, shortly after it was reported that the 36-year-old husband and father shot himself with a .22-caliber handgun, Denton County Sheriff's Department spokesman Kevin Patton said.
oreno discharged multiple rounds from a pistol into the lake, then pointed the gun toward his nose and pulled the trigger again, according to statements from two men fishing with him in a small boat, Patton said.
"It looks like it's an accidental death," Patton said. That's based on statements given by Moreno's fishing companions that he "lost count of the rounds when he was firing the gun," Patton said.
The incident took place at about 5:30 p.m., 50 to 75 yards off Lake Shore Lane, near Vacation Village Mobile Home Park, Patton said. A 911 call was placed within five minutes and emergency responders arrived at 5:40 p.m., finding Moreno dead, Patton said. Moreno was married and has at least one child, Patton said.
oreno's friends told investigators the three men were drinking earlier Sunday, but they did not take alcohol with them on the boat, Patton said.
