Snowmobiler Flames Out
2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance
This is an addition to a story I posted a couple of weeks ago (sorry if this isn't the correct place to post an addendum). As you can see from the article below, the person involved in this incident has, tragically, succumbed to his injuries. I guess that he now certainly meets the criteria for a Darwin.
Unfortunately, in addition to being one of the worlds finest ski areas, Whistler is also a magnet for would-be "extreme" athlete who, emboldened by what we call "Kodak Courage", will try anything in an attempt to make it into an extreme sports video, or onto the pages of a ski mag. Frequently, they end up looking like "extreme goofballs" as their mangled bodies are hauled out of the mountains.
By the way, did your moderator, Duncan, actually read the article? What "accident"?! Dude, he intentionally drove a snowmobile (wheelie-style, according to some reports), through a wall of flaming gasoline!! Duncan will have to do better to live up to his fine name.

an involved in snowmobile stunt dies
SQUAMISH (CKNW) -
A bizarre snowmobiling stunt last month in Squamish has claimed the life of a Whistler man. Josh Chapman, 23, died Sunday afternoon from severe burns he suffered in the accident.
On July 20, Chapman was wearing just a T-shirt and baseball cap when he drove his snowmobile through a gasoline-fuelled fireball. The stunt was being filmed for an extreme-sports video.
RCMP Sgt. Tracy Hardy says they are still looking for witnesses. "We haven't spoken with everyone that was present and we'd like people to come forward with whatever information they can supply to us."
The B.C. coroners' service is assisting in the investigation. Submitted on 08/06/2002
