Timothy Kalendek, 32, of Joppa, MD wanted to videotape his friend on his first helicopter ride at an airshow in Rantoul, IL. Kalendek asked officials for permission to get close to the helicopter to get a good shot, but well aware of the dangers of helicopter blades, his answer was a firm negative.
Not one to take "no" for an answer, Kalendek hid in an adjacent cornfield and stepped in the path of the helicopter just as it was taking off.
“The pilot takes off and basically puts the nose down and tilts the helicopter to go around the cornfields. The guy steps out and, bam, that's it,” remarked Champaign county's chief deputy coroner.
Luckily, Kalendek's brother-in-law was videotaping the event (from further away) and caught Mr. Kalendek being removed from the gene pool, as well as his head being removed from his neck. Submitted on 08/05/2002
