Lightning killed a man standing on a roof in New York City as a severe
thunderstorm rattled the region, knocking out electrical power to
thousands of customers.
Passengers were stranded on a New Jersey amusement park ride late
Friday as the storm swept across parts of New Jersey, southeastern New
York and Connecticut.
Lightning killed a 25-year-old man who was watching the storm with
friends on the roof of an apartment building in New York's Little
Italy, said police Detective Cheryl Cox.
Lightning struck the New York metropolitan area between 5,000 and
7,000 times during a three-hour period, said National Weather Service
( news - web sites) meteorologist Jeffrey Tongue. More than an inch of
rain fell, he said. Submitted on 08/03/2002
