My first patient as a young nurse (many moons ago) was a truckddriver who stopped at a rest stop. When he urinated, he noticed that his urine was bloody. So he decided to treat himself by sticking a styptic pencil up his penis.
Ouch! ouch! ouch!!
For those of you too young to remember styptic pencils, they were white, fat-pencil-shaped objects used to stop bleeding from cuts while shaving, usually made of alum or tannic acid.
I also had a patient who tried to catheterize himself using plastic clothesline. He had had to come to the ER once before with the inabilty to urinate and he tried to replicate the catheterization that the staff had done Unfortunately, the clothesline was not a tube. Like the guy in your story, it knotted and he had to come in and have it scoped out. Submitted on 07/27/2002
