Man dies after fall into chocolate vat
ANDREW R. HICKEY , Staff Writer 07/24/2002
HATFIELD TWP. – A 19-year-old Philadelphia man was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon shortly after his co-workers at a township candy factory found him completely submerged in a 1‚200-gallon vat of liquefied chocolate.
Hatfield Township Detective Patrick M. Hanrahan said employees at the Kargher Corporation‚ at 3131 Sandstone Drive‚ in the Line Lexington Industrial Park‚ found Yoni Cordon‚ of Olney Avenue‚ in the vat just after 4 p.m.
It is believed that Cordon was working on a platform near the opening of the vat‚ which was about half-full‚ when he fell in. The vat is used for mixing and melting chocolate and was in operation when Cordon fell‚ Hanrahan said.
It was unclear Tuesday how long Cordon had been submerged in the chocolate before his co-workers discovered his body because “no one actually saw him fall in‚” Hanrahan said.
Shortly after his body was found‚ Cordon was pronounced dead at the scene by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office‚ police said.
Cordon’s cause of death was also unknown Tuesday‚ Hanrahan said‚ adding that an autopsy will be performed and its results may be available today.
As of Tuesday night‚ foul play was not suspected‚ police said.
“We’re investigating this as a fatal occupational accident‚” Hanrahan said.
Phone messages left at the Kargher Corporation were not returned Tuesday night.
Investigators remained at the factory for more than two hours conducting interviews and surveying the scene‚ Hanrahan said.
Township police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will continue their investigation into Cordon’s death.
Hatfield police were assisted at the scene by the Volunteer Medical Service Corps‚ that Hatfield Fire Company‚ the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office and OSHA representatives.
