How not to motorcycle

When the expert is not in I get to field inquiries from lawyers who wish to hire us as experts in tort suites. This was from a lawyer we had not done business with before. He wanted to know if we thought he had a sufficiently good case to proceed and to hire us.
Seems his deceased client rode his motor bike into a utility pole which was placed on the outside of a curve. My first question was how far off the road was the pole. Oh, about two feet, he said. Excellent, I replied, we have lots of data on the dangers of placing poles so close to the road. Had he been drinking? Well, yes he had had a couple of drinks. OK, I said, that is not good but it is not insurmountable. Another thing though, said the lawyer, this guys engine wasn't working and he was being towed by a pickup truck. At this I roared with laughter and and said the only thing possible- You've got to be kidding!
Needless to say we did not take the case. Submitted on 07/23/2002
