Man nearly drowns chasing hat
CARLING TOWNSHIP -- A non-swimmer from Southern Ontario nearly lost his life Sunday, July 14, 2002 when he jumped out of a boat to retrieve a hat.
Police said Andrew Hamilton, 47, of Erin was out on a boat on Blind Bay with his wife, Marsha, 53, and two friends, James and Susan Green, when his hat blew off and fell in the water.
Although he is not a swimmer, Hamilton leapt from the boat without a lifejacket on, police said. Once in the water, he panicked, and went under, police added.
Marsha Hamilton then jumped in the water, brought her husband to the surface and pulled him to the rear of their boat. By then, Hamilton was turning blue and not breathing.
Two boaters -- Doug Mitchler, 23, of Midhurst and Bill Pelan, also 23, of Barrie -- went to the Hamilton boat to help pull the man from the water.
Once he was back on board, Marsha Hamilton began cardiopulmonary resuscitation on her husband.
Firefighters and ambulance personnel were alerted and were waiting at the government dock in Blind Bay when the Hamilton boat reached shore. Hamilton was reported to be in stable condition when he was transported to hospital.
There was no alcohol involved in the incident, West Parry Sound OPP reported, adding that everyone venturing out on the water should be wearing a lifejacket or personal flotation device.
