Don't Drink and Ride
2003 Reader Submission

It seems that the hero of our story had been out drinking one night and was riding around on his bicycle. Perhaps he was riding home, perhaps he was out in search of more booze. We'll likely never know.
While riding around, he apparently had some problems with his bike. In a flash of inspiration, he stopped in the middle of the intersection and set to work fixing it.
Unfortunately his efforts were all for naught. In the poor visibility of the night, streetlights not withstanding, he was struck by a car and both he and his bicylce went flying for some distance.
Thankfully there are 4 major hospitals within a mile or two of his location. In short order our hero was taken to the nearest level 1 trauma center in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the car was taken to a different hospital with only minor injuries. No word what became of the poor bicycle, but one can suppose that it was probably killed as well and now rests in a scrap heap somewhere. I can only hope that the death of the bicycle doesn't disqualify our hero from his hard-earned Darwin award.
I'm including two references and two versions of the story here.
