Car vs Logging Truck

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

Here in New Zealand, some logging trucks with VERY big, long, loads operate

on private off-highway roads... heres what can happen when a car gets

involved... kinda messy!. While there's no DA it's only a matter of time for the driver of the car. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

An idiot driving a Ford car (travelling at what seems to be excessive speed)

ran up the rear of Truck #521... (in a BIG way). Two overhanging logs passed

through the windscreen and out the rear window, missing the three occupants

of the car (yes, unbelievably, they SURVIVED).

The car travelled 23 feet up the logs before hitting the rear bumper of the trailer (with enough force that the car was jammed under the bumper

AND suspended off the ground, by the two logs). The occupants of the (still

moving) car then jumped out onto the gravel road (ouch!!!).

The truck driver (Bill) was unaware of the incident and continued his journey along Goudies Road for 2 miles, then down Pukapuka Road for a

further 2.5 miles.

Another truck (#655) was travelling up Pukapuka Road. Both trucks slowed to

pass each other - in doing so the dust reduced enough for Bill (driving

Truck #521) to see part of the car in his mirror. He asked Jimmy (in Truck

#655) on the CB radio what was behind him. Jimmy replied that "a car is

hanging off the logs".

On inspection they found no passengers in the car. Bill left his truck and drove back with Jimmy to locate the cars occupants. They found them on

the side of the road, near to the scene of the original collision. The

ambulance and police arrived...

Cause:

Excessive speed after leaving the public highway and not slowing down for

dusty private off highway conditions (where cars are NOT supposed to be).

The driver of the car stated he was familiar with the off highway road (and

the off highway logging trucks travelling on it... YEAH RIGHT). He also

stated he was travelling in light dust, but did not think a truck was ahead

of him - even when he drove into VERY thick dust (obviously swirled up BY a

truck). Stated he "applied the brakes" and when he saw the truck, looked at

his speedo - and was travelling at 45 mph.

THE TRUCKIE WAS NOT AT FAULT.

Definitely Keep: Honorable Mention
I've driven (legally) on many logging roads here in Ontario. Logging trucks are not the slowest vehicles on the road, and I can't imagine ramming one at speed, although here they are not allowed to hang loose logs off the end. Driving as fast as they had to be when they couldn't see because of dust is a definite way to win a DA.

aybe he was driving backward, but I'm seeing the logs going through the roof, and out the rear windshield of the car. I'm thinking this was staged.

Fairly stupid behaviour on teh part of the driver. Pictures certainly make the story...
