Sewanee geniuses

My friend works as a park ranger at Fall Creek Falls state park in Tennessee. A group of three Sewanee students came to his, asking permission to participate in "extreme sports" in the park: they wanted to kayak off the falls. He told them no, to go away.
They decided to go for it anyway. They pretended to leave, and drove around to another entrance and hiked down to the falls. One of them strapped himself into the kayak while the other two set up a video camera for proof of their "extreme" stupidity.
The plan was for the one in the kayak to just paddle across the falls, and to land in the deep part of the river next to the falls. They did not, though, take into account the speed with which he would would cross over the edge.
Net result, the student who was in the kayak landed well past where he was supposed to, in the shallows, in the rocks, on his side. His frightened friends decided to not tell the ranger, because they were afraid of him (he's an ex-Marine, and he keeps in shape). They picked up theior wounded comrade, carried him up the hiking trail to the car, and took him to the hospital.
He is still in a coma after six months. As a Darwin sidenote, he is/was a student, so it is very likely that he has not yet reproduced. Submitted on 07/06/2002
