Man drowns in own pool
Tried to swim under pool blanket
Jul 1, 2002
COURTICE - A 53-year-old Courtice man drowned during an early morning swim in his pool Friday.
Police were called to Alderbrook Drive around 3:50 a.m. after James Dunn swam under his pool cover and didn't come back up.
"He was with a friend or neighbour and swam under the pool cover. The two were swimming and (Mr. Dunn) indicated he wanted to check the thermometer that was at the other end of the pool," said Inspector Tom Cameron with the Durham Regional Police.
They got into the pool, but only pulled a section of the cover back. When Mr. Dunn didn't return, his neighbour also swam under and found the man unconscious. Unable to move him, he ran home and called police.
Police arrived four minutes later, pulled the pool cover off and saw Mr. Dunn lying face down in the bottom of the pool. The three officers on scene jumped into the water, pulled Mr. Dunn out and immediately began CPR. Fire truck and ambulance arrived on scene and the man was taken to Lakeridge Health Bowmanville where he was pronounced dead shortly after. Police believe alcohol was a factor.
