Osvaldo Martinez was a Panamanian national charged with a sample of various crimes, including membership in one of the most dangerous car-robber gangs, and the killing of a judge.
Last June 18, tired of local law-enforcement incomprehension, he decided a change of air was due.
But not liking to add solitude to homesickness, he smuggled past the Costa Rican border along with a girl (Esther Cordoba) aged 17, so legally a minor.
He succeded in the border crossing, but arriving to Palmar Norte, a Costa Rican town, they were spotted by local policemen, who wanted to ask some questions to the girl.
As she didn't have any papers, nor his male escort, he was taken into a local jail, a more than humble building near the Terraba River, a water course 200 meters wide.
As Martinez soon realised, the jail was not made to contain a man of his abilities, so the next morning, he broke free and jump into the dark waters of the river.
Sadly, he failed to ask first, why nobody likes to swim in that peaceful river in a Saturday morning.
The reason is, or are, the large crocodiles living around there. These saurii are usually no dangerous to humans, except when the bipeds approach their egg-nests.
And that's what Osvaldo Martinez did.
A 4-5 meter crocodile, frienly dubbed "Juancho" by the inhabitants of Palmar Norte, miscontrued the freedom pursuit of Martinez for a predator in search of his descendants, so he grabbed the swimmer by the head and drowned him.
A biker crossing the bridge over the Terraba River Bridge at that moment, noticed the large croc pulling along something like a man, so he stop and called for the police, a search was launched, but the sauri was resolved to avoid any negative publicity, so none was found.
Osvaldo Martinez's corpse finally surfaced next Monday, and the police determined the croc's fangs marks in the scalp indicated Juancho was even less tolerant than Panama's judiciary system.
As to the girl, he was deported back to Panama, where she could attest there is no free ride
