This account comes from a friend, a now retired
member of the Passaic County (NJ) Sheriff Department Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Squad during a fire department class on Hazardous materials.
Suburban pool owners are familar with the spring
ritual of "shock treating" the water of their
pools by adding a large dose of chlorine. This one homeowner in Pompton Lakes (NJ) decided to
go one better. He took several large tablets of
pool treatment chemicals and using a hammer smashed them to powder. He then put the powdered
chemicals in a metal bucket and proceeded to
pour in liquid bleach while stirring the mixture. The resulting explosion hurled him
backwards several feet. The local fire department found him on the lawn next to the pool retching from the chemical fumes - his hair bleached a
lovely shade of green from the chlorine.
