ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Police say a man who escaped from police custody lost his arm while trying to remove his handcuffs on a passing train.
Albuquerque police say they think the man was trying to use the train to cut the cuffs.
The man escaped last night. He was found a short while later. His arm was found in a nearby parking lot.
The man was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital where he was listed in serious condition.

Here's the story: This happened in downtown Albuquerque. Downtown, late at night, the trains often slow to a crawl. As a veteran of too many hours spent watching Heckle and Jeckle cartoons, the man, an escapee from police custody at the Bernalillo County Detention Center downtown, put the cuffs on the track and thought the wheels would cut through the cuffs, like he had seen in the cartoons. But the cuffs became entangled under the wheels and his arm was pulled off. (No explanation was given as to how his arm got to the nearby parking lot.)
He walked away from the tracks, and wandered, spurting blood, into a downtown bar. He asked for help, but didn't want them to call an ambulance because he'd end up going back to jail.
Hope this is worth an honorable mention -- unfortunately, as far as I know, the amputation didn't affect his ability to contribute to the gene pool. Submitted on 06/28/2002
