There's a car in the road?

Everyone is warned about the drunk drivers and other drivers with road rage, but they never mentioned anything about watch out for the pedestrians. It's just that people can be pretty spontaneous about street crossing. One minute, they're on the sidewalk and the next minute they're in the middle of the street trying to cross the other half of it.
One afternoon, while driving to work, I noticed a not so strange sight - a middle-aged woman standing right in the middle of my part of the road who appeared to be looking to the side as if to cross. I slowed down a bit and looked a little bit closer and was shocked to find that she was quite content with walking straight at me while talking with her friend who was brightly walking on the sidewalk. So I decided that this lady may be hard of hearing, so I slowed down...and slowed down some more...and slowed WAY down...until I was finally stock still in the street. I sat and watched and the woman walked without even noticing that I was sitting right in front of her. Finally, it happened and she walked right into the front of the car.
The first reaction was hilarious because she stared at me wide-eyed and had this expression on her face like she was thinking, "Why is there a car in the road? Are they allowed to do that?" Her next reaction was that she grabbed her knee as though it hurt and then limped across the rest of the street...straight into on-coming traffic, oblivious to the honking of horns and skreeching of tires while continuing her conversation with her friend, along with throwing dirty looks my way as she walked.
I got out of there as quickly as I could before I could be charged with hit-and-run, but I suspect that this woman may be holding a Darwin sometime in the future...if she's got one...Submitted on 06/28/2002
