Sky-diving Instructions

Darwin Awards,
I wanted to relay a story that I read in the newspaper some years ago that might qualify as an award winner. In the mid-1980’s I was living in New London, CT when I read in the local newspaper (“The Day”, I believe) about a parachute instructor that had fallen to his death. I am trying to recall the details of the story from memory, so dates, places etc. are uncertain. I believe that the incident happened in North or South Carolina. As I mentioned, I read about it in the local New London, CT newspaper. The story went like this:
A parachute instructor had a group of trainees and was videotaping their lessons. He had the video recorder in his helmet so that it would capture the days instructions. The group went up in the plane and the instructor lead them through prepairations for the jump. When they reached the jump site, the students and instructor jumped from the plane, tape still running. It was some time after this that the instructor realized that, during his concentration in preparing his trainees for the jump, he had forgotten to put on his own parachute. All but the last 10 feet of the plummet was recorded on the tape. That part of the tape was destroyed by the impact.
This was the account that I read in an article printed in a reputable newspaper. Unfortunately, I am recalling it all from memory. If the account can be verified it seems like a valid nomination for a Darwin Award.
