...or at least make sure there's no dangerous obstructions in the way. Yes, including that garden hose, for it will reach out and get you. It'll even bring it's big brother, the sump pump.
A 52 year old maintenance man for a hog confinement operation was mowing grass around a manure lagoon using a tractor equipped with a belly mower. Standard mowing fare, or so you would believe. This king of mowing doesn't need to take precautions!
In his rounds of mowing the grass, he ran over a garden hose which was attached to a sump pump in a fenced off area used for fuel storage. How he didn't notice the hose or why he didn't shut off the mower in time, the orchestra still doesn't know, but that hose wound up in the mower. Giving a good, hard yank along it's length, it tugged the sump pump up and over the chain link fence to play a tune upon his noggin. Out like a leisure suit is to fashion, he's still mowing in his unanticipated slumber. Swerving downhill into the lagoon, the tractor threw Mower Van Winkle into it, and then proceeded to flip over on top of him to result in his drowning.
Did I forget to mention that this was a *manure lagoon*?
oral of this story is:
When mowing the lawn, make sure you check for things in the way or else you may die in a very crappy way.
