(First off, I wasn't actually there, but my mother is a nurse, and one of her patients last week, we'll call her Mary, was the one who told her this...)
Columbus, Ks: Last Wednesday, Mary hired a local family-owned contruction company to repave her home driveway. The men showed up on time, set out on their work, and all was well. Periodically throughout the day Mary popped out of the house to check on them, offer something to drink (as it was a good 100 degrees before noon) and all in all making sure they weren't goofing off on the job.
The men were diligent workers, though, so Mary had no reason to worry.
Until that is, she was folding laundry later, and heard what she described as "the most bloodcurdling, awful scream she'd ever known in all her life" coming from the yard. Quickly running out to see what the problem was, Mary discovered a man being crushed by a driverless steam roller! By the time she'd come onto the scene, his legs were far gone and he was still screaming in a way that Mary stated "she would never, in all her life forget the sound." Knowing a little bit about the machine's operation, Mary quickly rushed out and got into the driver's seat of the roller and stopped it. Unfortunately, she was too late. The machine had entirely squashed the workman into the ground, save for one arm that had been sprawled out above him.
ary spent the rest of the day throwing up and trying to sedate away the horrible scene. She was still badly shaken the next day when she went to my mother's office.
Reportedly the other workmen had been beginning lunch break, and the poor sap driving the roller had gotten off to join them, when his machine unexpectedly lurched forward and caught him underneath. (Of course, had he had the fore-sight to TURN OFF THE MACHINE before he got off, this might have been prevented.) Submitted on 06/22/2002
