A man was hit by a car Tuesday as he tried to save a turtle that had crawled onto Boynton Beach Boulevard in the early morning darkness.
Emanuel Rodriguez, 56, of Margate died a short time later at Delray Medical Center.
He and his wife had been driving on Boynton Beach Boulevard just east of Military Trail to deliver the Jewish Journal.
About 5:30 a.m., they saw the turtle in the westbound lanes, according to investigator Larry Colagiovanni.
His wife told investigators that Rodriguez pulled his van over, walked into the roadway and bent down to get the animal, but it walked away from him.
He might have heard the car coming because he started waving the driver to another lane.
But Rochelle Roth of Boynton Beach didn't see Rodriguez in time and hit him. It was still dark, but there were streetlights in the area, Colagiovanni said.
The turtle was gone when investigators arrived.
"The turtle made it," Colagiovanni said.
