^Man drowns while trying to retrieve car from river<

^
(Portlandville-AP) -- An upstate man survived after driving his
car into a river, only to drown later while attempting to retrieve
the vehicle from the water.
State police say yesterday's bizarre series of events occurred
in the Otsego County hamlet of Portlandville, near Oneonta.
Troopers say 27-year-old Jason Durso of Westford was leaving a
trailer park when he mistakenly drove down a dirt road used as a
boat launch.
Durso's car wound up partially submerged in the Susquehanna
River, but he managed to get out and go for help. He returned with
a second vehicle and attempted to pull his car out of the water
with a tow rope.
But the rope broke, and Durso's vehicle sank back into the water
-- with him in it.
Troopers say Durso again managed to get out of the car, but
began to struggle in the water. A person on the river bank tried to
pull him out, but Durso slipped beneath the surface.
A search by state police divers and emergency crews has failed
to turn up his body.
