Celebrations end in death of scientist, 24
Lewisham & Catford News Shopper June 12 2002 p9
An award winning young scientist’s celebration ended in tragedy when he slid down a banister at a medical school.
An inquest heard how medical researcher James Hutchinson, 24, had been out drinking with friends after winning a £100 cash prize at a science conference.
The Liverpudlian, who was staying in Harlinger Street, Woolwich, decided to mount a banister rail in the bar of St George’s Medical School in Tooting, but he fell backwards and plummeted down a floor to the basement.
He was taken to St George’s Hospital where he died of head injuries a day after the accident, on March 22 this year.
At last Thursday’s inquest, Westminster coroner, Dr Paul Knapman recorded a verdict of accidental death.
Three points come to mind.
1 When handing out prizes to the young and witless, consider book tokens.
2 What is a dangerously designed bar doing in a medical school.
3 Medical students cannot be trusted to save lives. Submitted on 06/15/2002
