Sounds fairly classic--also not his fault, if it was true. Reminds me a bit of "The Jungle," by Upton Sinclair (?). I vote that this gets in the slush pile--perhaps an UL ode to those lost in sausage casings, etc. is due.

The real act of stupidity here was the guy starting the vat before checking it... and he wasn't the one who died. If it happened, which I am uncertain of. This one has a strong, sausage-flavoured tinge of urban legend about it...

given the lack of specificity as to the date and that archives from that time are likely not searchable on the internet, I have no idea how to verify. Industrial accidents are suspect in that many are related to poor training or others not correctly following procedures.
