I originally heard about this story from relatives living in Swan River MB. I did a quick search on the internet and found several sources confirming it. (key words: Swan River News Flack Vest; Google)
When a 20 year old Swan River resident brought home a military style flack vest, he just wasn't happy with the Armed Forces seal of approval. He convinced his room mate to test it out by firing a .22 cal bullet at his chest, while he was wearing it! The small rifle bullet was stopped, but this wasn't enough to convince the owner of the vest. He figured he needed to test out the vests stopping power with a .12 guage shot gun, again while wearing the vest during the test. Somehow a tiny amount of intellegence showed through as the owner decided to stuff a phone book in the back of the vest where the shot was about to land. As it turned out the phone book was the only thing that stopped the powerful blast and saved the man. He suffered cracked ribs and severe bruises but survived. Submitted on 06/12/2002
