#Transfixed

2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance

On October 29th, 1999 My wife and I were married at a BMW Motorcycle Campout in NC. I had purchased a new BMW motorcycle for my wife as a wedding present, and was extremely protective.

A group of us went riding to a fruit cake factory together to get free samples, My Wife on her motorcycle and me following her on mine.

On the way a truck went wide in his lane and crossed over into my wifes's path on a curved mountain road. she chose to drive off the road into a field to avoid the accident and suffered only minor damage to the motrorcycle and her person, a sprained ankle.

I on the other hand, wether I was transfixed or totally stupid, followed her off the road, to help her.

Upon leaving the curve/road my motorcycle went down sideways and flipped.

If I had just parked my bike and walked to her I would have sustained no damage or injury, but instead, call it love, stupidity or being transfixed, I went down, HARD.

I broke 3 ribs, my arm, collarbone almost bled to death because I ruptured my spleen and an xray of my left shoulder looks like a road map of Georgia. the doctor in the emergency room told everyone to visit me before I went under to have the spleen removed that he didn't think they would see me again.

At least I got smart.

I only ride with my wife when she is one or more motorcycles behind me....I refuse to ever follow her again.

Well you were careless but your were also in distress, of course to death thats doesnt matter, but in such circumstances instinctive reactions tend to be poorly judged like in your case.

Certainly shows a marked lack of common sense, but it was "an emergency" and I suspect, react rather than think.

aking the wrong decision under pressure is not the same as genetic stupidity ... give yourself a break!

I think the fact that they were going for fruitcake is reason enough to give them a Darwin Award!
