Fireworked to Death

Popular high school student Adam Nicholas this week died in hospital. Just another fun-loving but incredibly naïve and stupid 16 year old, Adam and his friends had purchased -- illegally -- a 75mm pyrotechnic mortar, intended for commercial firework displays.
Adjourning to a vacant paddock near their home, Adam and his friends lit the blue touch paper and stood well back. They waited. Nothing happened. They waited some more. After a minute or two had passed Adam decided to investigate why the shell hadn’t worked as promised. He went over and peered down the barrel to see what was – or wasn’t going on.
Just as he looked in, the firework...worked. The 75mm shell struck Adam full in the face and exploded. Suffering horrific head injuries he was rushed to hospital, where he died two days later, surrounded by family and friends.
Adam, who went to a Christian school, was described by the principal, Bert Langerak, "A Christian who lived according to his faith", a rather unfortunate statement in the circumstances.
