Blowing air rings underwater

For decades Aquarena Springs in San Marcos, Texas had operated an live underwater show featuring lovely ladies doing water ballet and clowns doing tricks. Local college students were hired and trained as the performers. In 1972 I was one of the underwater clowns. One of the tricks we did was to dive down about 20 feet, lie on our backs, and blow air rings, which would twirl beautifully upward. If the river currents were stable and we were fast we could even make one air ring go through another one. When done at the show it was safe. We each had our own air hose and when low on breath after a few air rings, a bite on the hose trigger blew precious air into our lungs. But one of our number, at a party, decided to give a demonstration for his friends. He had been drinking, took a deep breath, swam to the bottom of the deep end of the pool, lay on his back and began to puff air rings, one after another, until he was out of air. Then he turned his head to bite the air hose that wasn't there, and drowned. He was in his early twenties and hadn't father any children yet.Submitted on 06/08/2002
