EL CAJON – A woman suffered critical burns late Tuesday when she used a lighter to see if gasoline she was pouring into her gas tank from a plastic container was spilling.
The flame ignited the gas and set the woman on fire, said Division Chief Mike Scott of the El Cajon Fire Department. The man she was with rushed to her aid and helped extinguish the flames, Scott said.
"It appears to be purely accidental and a lack of discretion on using a lighter to light up the area," said Scott.
The incident occurred in a parking lot off Fletcher Parkway shortly after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The woman and her companion were putting about a gallon of gas in the tank.
The woman is in critical condition at the burn unit of an area hospital, authorities said.
