How did you loose that finger?

How did you loose that finger?

This supposedly occurred in the mid ‘70’s in the Gypsum plant in Plaster City, Ca. The plant makes drywall, and in one part of the process a screw conveyer runs along the overhead transferring material from one place to another.

Over the course of time the screw had worn a small hole in the pipe, allowing some of the gypsum material to be expelled and fall to the floor. An employee noticed a small, conical pile of material lying on the floor, and looking up noticed the material falling from the hole in the pipe.

He proceeded to stick his finger into the hole, (for what purpose I know not). The revolving screw in the pipe immediately cut off his index finger at the first joint.

After providing the necessary medical attention, a supervisor started questioning the other employees in the area about how the accident had happened. Upon hearing the stories and looking at the scene, He proceeded to stick his finger in the hole and have it amputated. (Dumb is as dumb does)?

As if this wasn’t bad enough, a couple of weeks later an insurance investigator, apparently there to ascertain why two such stupid accidents could happen on the same day, looked at the accident scene. A piece of tape had been placed over the hole as a temporary measure. He pulled off the tape to look at the hole, stuck his finger in the hole, thereby proving that the accident not only could, but did, happen as reported.

I did not personally witness any of the three accidents, but made deliveries at the plant between the injuries of the employees and the insurance investigator, as well as shortly after the third one and heard the stories.

In later years I did some accident investigation and can understand the first, but not the second or third injury. I have also heard the story many times over the years, surprisingly with little or no embellishment. The last fact alone lends tremendous creditability to the story. But then again, how could you improve on such stupidity?

Well written, entirely believable, but unfortunately no threat to reproduction.

Not sure about this one. I've heard much the same story about a mincer.

I think there's a hole in this story; let me check...
