Death by dry cleaning
2003 Reader Submission

Sorry for the lack of media reference. Around 1993, I had an account with the DIALOG database search service. As a struggling information broker (part time - I worked in a hazardous waste recycling plant during the day), I took the hands-on training course, which let us do free searches.
I don't remember te specific psychology journal I was searching, and later attempts over the years have failed to re-locate this item.
I did a search on "ethane" and "death" and (out of perverseness) "sex". It returned one hit:
A 17 year-old boy and his 16 year-old girlfriend decided to go behind the local dry cleaning shop, where perchloroethane vapors were being vented. The goal was to get high on the vapors, and then have sex while high.
Unfortunately, the high level of perchloroethane in the boy's system, and the strenuous physical exertion of the sex, the boy died of a heart attack.
We can only hope that he pulled out before expiring... Submitted on 05/05/2002
