KADOKA -- Kirk Scott Magelky, 29, grew up in the Kadoka area, graduated from Kadoka High School and knew just about everyone in town, Jackson County Sheriff Arlo “Bruce” Madson said. The sheriff expects that a big crowd will turn out for the young man’s funeral on Tuesday.
“It’s a tragic thing. I still can’t believe it,” said the sheriff, whose oldest daughter graduated from high school with Magelky.
Kirk Magelky died Friday in an accident on the family farm northwest of Kadoka. According to the sheriff’s report, Magelky was apparently using a cutting torch to cut the end out of a 55-gallon steel drum. Heat from the torch apparently ignited flammable residue inside, which caused the drum to explode, the sheriff said.
Magelky was working alone at the time of the accident. His younger brother found him at the scene. The Jackson County coroner has done a routine investigation, but Madson said the circumstances of the accident are clear, and no further investigation is warranted.
