"A Rockford man suffered minor injuries Saturday when a cistern exploded behind his home. The blast blew a hole in the house's foundation and shattered the windows in his house and a neighbor's.
Juan Flores, 27, had filled the cement cistern with leaves and brush while sprucing up his yard at 1620 Fifth Ave. He doused the leaves with gas, replaced the container's cement lid and used a long barbecue lighter to ignite the yard waste.
'It blew the cistern apart, destroyed the foundation...and sent the large lid flying 20 feet into the yard,' Sgt. Joe Westmoreland said.
The 11 a.m. explosion ruptured a gas line in the house; neighbors were evacuated until the gas was shut off. A city inspector temporarily condemned Flores' house. No charges were filed." Submitted on 04/29/2002
