Oakfield - Two Smyrna women stopped to watch some deer alongside the interstate. The car was stopped in the travel lane of the highway!!! No brake lights were on because the transmission was in park!!
Lawrence Winchell and his wife, Mary also saw the deer and the women's car, but he did not realize Splan's car was stopped. Winchell struck the Splan vehicle in the rear while traveling at the speed limit of 65 mph.
Both vehicles were destroyed, and all four survived!
The women were 77 and 59 years old, and residents of Maine where deer are usually visible almost every day from most highways. Submitted on 04/12/2002
