Master Mechanic - Honorable Me
2003 Reader Submission
Pending Acceptance
While I worked at a US Government Agency, We had a rocket scientist for a mechanic. I've moved on but I kept in touch with some friends. This story was relayed to me when I revisited.
The crew was coming back from the field on their lunch break. One of the trucks had a fuel pump go bad earlier that day or late the previous day. It was parked in front of one of the mechanic bays. Einstein (lets call him) was preparing to work on it.
The tank had been recently filled. Einstein, not wanting to drain the tank and use the tens of thousands of dollars of lifts and other useful tools to remove it, takes an oxy-acetylene torch and proceeds to cut a hole in the bed of the truck directly above and inches away from the full gas tank and fuel lines.
The crew decided it would be nice to take lunch in the field that day and let God sort it out. A few hours later, and not hearing any detonation, they tentatively returned.
Einstein, by sheer luck, was unscathed and is a Honorable Mention as opposed to a Darwin Nominee. Submitted on 04/04/2002
