A MAN plunged 150ft to his death when his three-wheeled sand buggy ran over a cliff.
The 32-year-old man had been free-wheeling down Carlton Bank, near Stokesley, North Yorks, when it ran out of control and landed on rocks at the foot of the cliff.
The buggy, which is normally used on flat sands and is powered by a kite, is not thought to have been equipped with brakes.
Its rider, who has not been named, was taken by RAF helicopter to hospital in Middlesbrough, where he died.
Pete Mounsey, of Cleveland Search and Rescue Team, said: "It seems the buggy was being ridden down the hill and then pushed back to the top. Each time it was steered away before coming to the cliff edge. On this occasion, for whatever reason, this didn't happen and it went over the cliff."
The area, which is popular with mountain bikers and paragliders, was packed with Bank Holiday Monday day-trippers. The dead man, believed to be single, of Norton, Teesside, was with three friends
