TANGAIL, Bangladesh, Apr 2: An attempted highway robbery ended up with the death of five of the suspected gangsters as they were crushed under the wheels of a truck they were trying to hold up, off the town late Sunday night.
Police and witnesses said they were crushed inside a car they were riding as it was run over by a cow-laden truck on the Tangail bypass of the Dhaka-North Bengal highway at midnight.
Police said the truck rammed into the private car carrying the gangsters that tried to block the way in their bid to commit dacoity.
All but one of the car passengers were killed and the other was wounded critically. A helper of the truck also received serious injuries in the collision.
The deceased were identified as Mokammel Hossain, 30, Muktel Ali, 28, Bablu Miah, 26, and Idris Ali of Sirajganj district and Ismail Hossain, 30, of Dhaka’s Mirpur area.
The wounded helper of the Dhaka-bound truck from Bhuapur in Tangail and the lone surviving passenger of the private car were admitted to hospital in critical condition.
Police said it was a hijacked car that was crumpled under the truck as the driver made a frantic effort to escape the late-night holdup.
A cow was also killed in the accident. A case was filed.
