ASHLAND, Ohio -- Police are still searching for a man who allegedly shot an Ashland County police chief Tuesday.
NewsChannel5 reported that a manhunt continued Wednesday in a rural, wooded area near state Route 39. The suspect is considered armed and dangerous.
Officials said that Perrysville Police Chief Tim Sommer, 52, was shot in the leg during a routine traffic stop around 2 p.m. Tuesday
Apparently, Sommer was on County Road 1057 near Mohican State Park, trying to stop a rusted-out white or gray Chevrolet that was missing its license plates. Police said that before Sommer could even get out of his cruiser, the suspect in the white car opened fire, shooting a bullet through Sommer's windshield.
Instead of leaving the scene, the suspect reportedly then charged the police chief, according to officials. There was a struggle and more gunfire, and Sommer was shot in the leg. He was taken by Lifeflight to Grant Metro Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Here's the two-way radio call from Sommer to the Sheriff's Department.
"Shots fired, shots fired -- I'm hit," he said. "Vehicle left scene heading toward lodge."
Sommer is still recovering at the hospital, but his condition Wednesday is being kept confidential.
An Ashland County sheriff's deputy who was rushing to the scene was also wounded when he got into a car crash.
Their injuries are not life-threatening, according to officials.
The suspect is described as a white male, 6 feet 4 inches tall and 195 pounds with a beard.

---------beginning os story part 2---------
PERRYSVILLE, Ohio -- A police chief in Ashland County who said he was shot during a traffic stop admitted Wednesday to making up the whole story.
NewsChannel5 reported that according to sheriff's investigators, Perrysville Police Chief Tim Sommer (pictured, left) confessed to accidentally firing his rifle through the windshield of his police car.
To cover up that shooting, Sommer said that he went out to a county road, called on a police radio for help and fired his weapon to make it appear that there was trouble at the scene of a traffic stop.
Then, he accidentally fired his weapon again, striking his own leg.
The Ashland County prosecutor is reviewing this case.
