A man I work with lost a son-in-law when he challenged a train on a snowmobile. The train won, killing him.
March 1, 2002 — An Illinois man riding on a snowmobile died early Thursday from injuries he suffered when the vehicle collided with an eastbound Canadian Northern train. Aaron Mercer, 28, of West Chicago, Ill., was pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital in South Bend about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Mercer was second in a line of snowmobilers attempting to cross the railroad tracks late Wednesday night at a point where a snowmobile trail intersects the tracks, investigators told the South Bend Tribune. The first snowmobiler made it across the tracks, but Mercer proceeded forward and his snowmobile slammed directly into the side of the eastbound train's engine, officials said. The accident occurred a few miles southwest of South Bend, which is about 55 miles east of Chicago.
